RYA Level 2- Basic Skills

Course Description
This course will help you gain more confidence and will build on the experience you have already gained. You will learn more techniques for controlling your boat and how to adapt to a greater variety of situations. We will introduce you to racing and teach you some of the techniques for making your boat sail faster. You will also learn more about keeping yourself and your crew safe. The course will be taught by professional RYA instructors in a friendly and practical manner.

RYA Level 2 Basic Skills

The course will cover:

  • How to rig a dinghy according to the weather

  • Able to reef the dinghy ashore 

  • Learning easy knots and ropework

  • Sailing in all directions

  • Capsize recovery

  • Launching and returning to a jetty or lake side

  • Man overboard

  • Essential safety knowledge

  • Launching and recovery

  • Weather

  • Basics of racing

On completion of the level 2 course you'll be a competent light wind sailor and be able to enjoy the freedom and beautiful scenery Ullswater provides.

Course Duration - Minimum 2 days or spread over 16 hours You could combine Levels 1 and 2 in a 5 day programme.

Previous Experience - This course is the next step for those who have completed RYA Level 1 or those who have done some sailing in the past. 

Next Steps 

The best way to develop your skills further is initially to get out sailing as much as possible. When you feel ready to learn some more then you can book onto our Level 3, Better Sailing, course. This will build on your Level 2 skills and knowledge and introduce you to some of the advanced sailing modules. Your instructor can give you more information about this and other courses.
